About

Jacob Turnbow is an active Drill Designer.  He is an associate designer alongside Mitch Rogers who is a world class visual designer in the marching arts. Jacob has collaborated with Mitch since 2013 on a variety of projects for bands across the country.  His designs have been performed by ensembles of all sizes and competitive levels. He recently designed for the 2023 Bands of America (BOA) Regional Champions, Bartlett High School in Memphis, TN. Jacob played a pivotal role in the success of the Lafayette High School Marching Band from Lexington, Kentucky, who also earned the prestigious title of BOA Regional Champions (2019), BOA Super Regional Finalists (2022), and regularly wins the KMEA State Championship since 2017 when he joined the design team. Furthermore, his talents have contributed to victories for the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Champions, Greendale High School, and The Bandmasters Grand Champions, Munford High School in Tennessee.  He also designs for the Pride of Arizona Marching Band from the University of Arizona from Tucson, Arizona.

Jacob is an active adjudicator for the Michigan Competing Band Association (MCBA) and color guard for the Michigan Color Guard Circuit (MCGC).  He is also certified for judging in Kentucky (KMEA) and has been invited to adjudicate shows across the country. Jacob adjudicates Visual Field, Ensemble, and Effect captions. He believes that judging has contributed to his success as a designer and that his experience designing and instructing bands as well as guards gives him a balanced approach to providing feedback.

From 2017-2021, Jacob served as Marching Band Director and Interim Director of Bands for Milford High School from Highland, MI.  He was also a director and designer for Huron Valley Open and Odin Winter Guard who earned several Winter Guard International (WGI) Semi Finals appearances. Jacob was an Instrumental Specialist at Maltby Intermediate School in Brighton, MI and Farms Intermediate School in Hartland, MI). He worked with Brass students in sectionals, individually, or full band and assisted the Director of Bands.  Jacob Turnbow has served on staff for several marching bands since 2002, winter guards since 2011, and the 75th Anniversary Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps in 2015.

Jacob Turnbow attended Wayne State University for Instrumental Music Education.  He was an active participant in the University Band, Wind Symphony, and Orchestra.  Jacob also participated in several Chamber Ensembles and performed for the Foreign Counsels Gala in 2007.  He was the Orchestra Librarian in 2007-2008 and Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner in 2008.  During his time at Wayne State, Jacob studied conducting under Douglas Bianchi.  He also played on pretty average softball and indoor soccer teams with other students in the Music Department.  Little did he know that he would go on to coach his twin sons soccer teams on Saturday mornings before judging local marching band contests or being a guest clinician.
